The PLP government launched major farming initiatives to reduce The Bahamas’ heavy reliance on food imports. One of our flagship projects is the Golden Yolk Programme, aimed at achieving 100% self-sufficiency in egg production. 

The Golden Yolk project is investing $15 million to construct 38 new layer farms across 12 Family Islands (plus 8 in New Providence), which will boost local egg output 30-fold and save an estimated $12.5 million in annual egg imports. This initiative not only improves food security but also creates jobs and opportunities.

In addition, the Ministry of Agriculture has provided $1.5 million in grants to farmers and additional funding for livestock feed and broiler chickens to jump-start domestic meat and poultry farming . Other agri-projects include the rollout of community gardens and greenhouses, the revival of the BAMSI tutorial farm in North Andros to full production, and partnerships with wholesalers to buy local produce. 

The PLP government also secured $40 million in funding to upgrade packing houses, poultry processing facilities, and agriculture extension services. 

These efforts are already yielding results: local farmers are reporting increased yields of fruits and vegetables (tomato and pepper production are up markedly in 2024), and imports of eggs and leafy greens have started to decline.
