The PLP government made significant strides in improving conditions for public sector workers and resolving long-standing labour disputes. In March 2023, the government signed a new Industrial Agreement with the Bahamas Public Service Union (BPSU) placing $40 million dollars in public servants’ pockets.

This is among the 55+ labour agreements signed with various unions, delivering salary and benefits increases for tens of thousands of Bahamians in the public and private sectors, including teachers, nurses, doctors, and the officers in the uniform branches.

For the first time since 2015, the PLP government increased the minimum wage from $210 per week to $260 – an approximately 24% increase. This administration also increased various allowances (like uniform, hazard, and responsibility allowances) for the first time in nearly a decade and brought back annual increments designed to help workers cope with cost of living increases. 

The PLP government undertook the first comprehensive service-wide promotion exercise in over 8 years and is currently rolling out a public service-wide salary increase.

Significant progress has also been made on the promotions, confirmations, reclassifications, and regularisations backlogs, and the first-ever public service wide succession plan has been introduced, which has resulted in over 3,500 public service promotions and the hiring of over 2,000 young people under the age of 35.

Before the end of 2025, the government expects to introduce a number of major labour reforms to modernise labour laws, which will include extended maternity leave, new paternity leave policies, mental health policies, and remote work standards.
